Debt restructuring is a commitment to change. It can help you work towards repaying your debts and rebuilding a healthier relationship with credit — as a useful tool, rather than a way to live beyond your means.
Once the relevant completion and credit-record requirements are met, you can apply for credit again. Approval still depends on affordability and the lender’s criteria.
Understand the help available, how to book your assessment, and what to consider before choosing a repayment plan.
Debt counselling, also called debt review, is a formal process under the National Credit Act for people who are over-indebted. An NCR-registered debt counsellor assesses your budget and debts and proposes a repayment plan, generally confirmed by a court order. Eligible home loan, vehicle finance and unsecured repayments may be restructured. Legal protections are conditional on the process and meeting your obligations. It is not a new loan, and access to new credit is restricted.
Debt mediation involves asking a specialist to negotiate voluntary repayment arrangements with your creditors outside statutory debt review. Each creditor must agree to the proposed terms. The service described here focuses on unsecured debt; home loan and vehicle finance payments remain outside the arrangement. It has no debt-review court order and does not provide statutory debt-review protection. If you default, creditors may take enforcement action. It is not an NCR-approved substitute for debt counselling.
Yes, you can book an assessment to explore help with your existing debt. A declined loan does not mean there is nothing left to consider. The debt expert will look at your income, essential expenses and repayments to assess what may be workable. Booking an assessment does not guarantee that a particular plan or reduction will be available.
Complete the single form on this page and select “Two assessments (compare both)”. You will then take two assessments with two separate companies: one for debt counselling and one for debt mediation. Compare their proposed payments, fees and conditions before deciding. You only submit one booking form, and you are not signing up for two repayment plans.
No. A consolidation loan uses new credit to pay off existing accounts. Debt restructuring seeks a different repayment arrangement for debt you already owe. It is a way to work towards more manageable payments without stacking another loan on top of your debt. Your existing debts still need to be repaid.
The aim is to agree a manageable repayment plan, which may bring the included debts into one monthly payment for distribution to creditors. Your assessment will confirm the amount, which accounts are included and how payments are handled. Accounts outside the plan must still be paid separately. Reductions depend on the arrangement; a longer repayment period can increase total interest.
The form books the assessment you have selected; it is not itself an agreement to enter a repayment plan. Ask each company to explain its assessment process, fees and any documents you are asked to sign. A formal debt-review application has legal consequences, so understand the difference between booking a consultation and applying for debt review before proceeding.
Debt review legally restricts new credit. Voluntary mediation does not create that same statutory restriction, although the agreed terms may restrict further borrowing. Both options are intended to help you repay existing debt. Be prepared to change the borrowing habits that have kept you under pressure.
Debt restructuring does not mean giving up credit forever. After the relevant completion and credit-record requirements are met, you can apply again, subject to affordability and lender criteria. Debt-review clearance may be possible with a qualifying, up-to-date home loan remaining. Mediation has no equivalent statutory clearance certificate; ask how settled accounts will be updated. Future approval is not guaranteed.
Ask the company for a written breakdown of assessment, service, legal and payment-distribution fees that apply, before agreeing to proceed. If you book both assessments, check each company’s fees separately. Compare the full repayment cost and term as well as the monthly instalment.
Contact the company managing your plan as soon as you expect a problem. Do not stop or reduce payments without discussing the consequences. Default may put a debt-review arrangement at risk. Mediation has no statutory debt-review protection, and creditors retain their enforcement rights. Ask about missed-payment consequences during your assessment.
Complete this form once. Select debt review, debt mediation, or two assessments to compare both. The team will contact you to guide you through the assessment you have requested.
